1.  MALT DISTILLERY OF THE MOMENT

GLENBURGIE – An obscure Speyside treat:
Glenburgie is not a distillery that often comes to mind when thinking of Speyside whisky, but the whisky produced there is well worth considering if you fancy something off the beaten track. Founded as early as 1810, this distillery was once described as ‘ancient’ and old fashioned by Alfred Barnard. The distillery had been getting a little rough around the edges, then in 2004, a lot of the old buildings were replaced with newer ones, while the key whisky making equipment was retained, giving the distillery a rather unique old-meets-new feel.

TASTING NOTES:
Glenburgie is typified by notes of vanilla pod, toffee and caramel, with a unique citrus bitterness that adds an intriguing change from the initially sweet notes. This interesting Speysider, is available to taste in the shop, and is currently on special for $68 a bottle, great value for an interesting and different dram.

Glenburgie 10 year old 700ml 40% ABV $68

2. KILCHOMAN IS HERE (ALMOST!)

If you are a whisky fan, and particularly an Islay whisky fan, you will by now probably have heard that the newest distillery on Islay has finally released their first official whisky. The Kilchoman Inaugural, a limited edition bottling matured in fresh American Oak casks and European Oak has sold out overseas in record time. We are taking pre-orders now – It should arrive mid month so if you would like to reserve a bottle, please get in touch. Approx. Price: $118. Maximum 2 bottles per person.

3. NEXT TASTING – ISLAY NIGHT: ARDBEG

The final tasting for the year is always a cracker, and this year we’re sure that you will all be in agreement again with a simply fantastic Ardbeg tasting. We’re trying something very interesting by doing a rare head-to-head comparison of the old Ardbeg 10, prior to Glenmorangie’s buyout of the distillery in 1996, and the ‘new’ 10 year old distilled after 1996, along with some of Ardbeg’s other whiskies, including the “new” Corryvreckan which sold out in hours.

The line up of whiskies is as follows:

  1. Ardbeg 10 years old – pre-1996 distillation
  2. Ardbeg 10 years old – post-1996 distillation
  3. Ardbeg Airigh Nam Beist
  4. Ardbeg Uigeadail
  5. Ardbeg Corryvreckan 2nd release (only available from the distillery, now sold out)
  6. Ardbeg Supernova

VENUE – Christchurch Convention Centre

DATE – Friday 20th November

TIME – 7:00pm

COST - $51.00 or $45.00 for Guild Members, please book early to avoid disappointment!

4.  MICHAELS RANT- WHO’S FAULT IS IT IF YOU’RE DRUNK!

As someone who enjoys a dram and on occasion has been known to be slightly “mellow” who do I blame when I get picked up by the police or even worse berated by my wife or family!!

Well it’s nice to have an excuse, “sorry Stella, it was the cask strength Clynelish that finished me off” or “sorry officer I should have eaten more tatties with my evening meal”

None of these cut the mustard do they, if we drink too much it’s our own fault!

I don’t think we need every corner booze outlet and every supermarket or Whisky Galore selling 24/7, I can remember even in Scotland not being able to access more drink late at night during “party mode” and that was a good thing, I assure you.

Of course we need some rules and controls and some review of what happening, however at the same time what ever happened to “The Buck Stops Here”? That of course applies to sellers as well as buyers.

What am saying is, proportion the blame accordingly, allowing for the folly of youth and the like, this is I realise a very simple outlook and there are lots of argument around alcohol consumption/abuse, however personal responsibility is a base tenant of society, surely?
