Coming soon…
Tastings for 2010
We have an extraordinary lineup of tastings for 2010, and we will be making an announcement soon about one of the highlights coming in March this year.
February Whisky Shipment
The February whisky shipment is currently in the water, so keep your eyes peeled for some exciting new bottlings and a a re-stock on some big favourites of last year such as the Glendronach range.
1. Malt of the Moment: Dalmore:
We are starting 2010 with a couple of simply superb whiskies that haven’t been available in New Zealand for a while, and we’re certainly glad to have them back in stock. The first of which is the fantastic Dalmore range.
This iconic Highland distillery founded in 1831 is situated near the Alness River in Alness, Ross-shire. The unusually shaped flat-top stills at Dalmore produce a wonderfully fruity spirit, with a fragrant and deep orange-citrus note being one of its hallmark characteristics. The new range of Whiskies from Dalmore are rich and big in style, with notes of orange/citrus, chocolate, sherry and dark fruits.
Our range of Dalmore:
If you would like to know more about the new range of Dalmore we have in stock, why not have a look at our online store? We currently stock the Dalmore 12 year old, 15 year old, 18 year old, the Dalmore Gran Reserva and the Dalmore King Alexander III.
2. Malt of the Moment: Jura
The second whisky that we are delighted to see back on the shelves is Isle of Jura. This small and characterful distillery was built on the Island of Jura (on the west coast of Scotland, only 2 hours boat ride east from Islay) in 1810 some 200 years after distilling is claimed to have arrived on the island, brought there by way of Irish monks. The whisky from Jura is an intruiging mixture of soft, sweet malty notes, almonds, marshmallow, spices and a gentle hint of peat smoke and sea air – befitting of the distilleries shore-side location.
Our range of Isle of Jura:
Our selection of Isle of Jura has never been bigger nor better – we have the Isle of Jura Superstition & Prophecy, along with the Jura 10 year old and the 16 year old.
3. Malt of the Moment: Balmenach 1999
This Provenance bottling of a 1999/8 year old Balmenach is a great Speyside whisky, ideal for summer time drinking.
Tasting notes:
A soft, malty, sweet and fragrant dram, with light vanilla and fruit blossom on the nose, carrying through to a creamy, soft and fruity palate. The finish has a faint herbal note, followed by a lovely tang of orange liqueur.

4. Upcoming tasting: The Classic Malts
We’re starting out tasting this year with a cracker of a tasting, a head-to-head comparrison of the Classic Malts series. The Classic Malts series is whisky from the Talisker, Dalwhinnie, Cragganmore, Oban, Lagavulin & Glenkinchie distilleries, and we will be comparing the early-mid 1980’s versions (whisky made in the 70’s) with their modern counterparts – this is a rare oppertunity that will be a lot of fun.
Date: Friday, the 26th of February
Location: TBD
Cost: TBD
We will have further details on this tasting later in the month, but in the mean time, if you would like to reserve your ticket, please contact us. We expect this tasting to be very popular, so please do book early to avoid disappointment.
We hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Years, and we look forward to a fantastic whisky-filled 2010.
In the freshest of new year spirits,
The Whisky Galore Team
Michael, Siona, Andy, Stephen.

That doesn’t sound right: “on the Island of Jura (on the west coast of Scotland, only 2 hours boat ride east from Islay)”
It would have to be a very very slow ferry for that, considering the Sound of Islay (which the Jura ferry crosses) is only just over half a mile wide….
The ferry to Islay takes two hours (which I guess is where you get your two hours from), the crossing over to Jura from Islay only takes about 10 minutes. Getting to Jura from the mainland in total will take a good three hours though.
Unless you take the seasonal passenger only ferry, which takes just under an hour from the mainland.
